Experts examine issue of homosexuality in the priesthood
In November, the Vatican issued a directive that Catholic leaders "cannot admit to the seminary or to holy orders those who practice homosexuality, present deep-seated homosexual tendencies or support the so-called gay culture."
Some take it as a ban on gay men in the priesthood; others say it bans only those who are actively homosexual. The Instruction on Priestly Formation must be interpreted by bishops and those who lead seminaries and religious orders, as are other Vatican documents, including one in 1961 that stated gay men should not be ordained
